How to Modify Your Comment Settings
- Log in to your WordPress Dashboard.
- Go to Settings.
- Go to Discussion.
- Modify the comment settings as you desire. Several relevant settings are explained here:
- Allow people to post comments on new articles (also see How to Enable or Disable Comments)
- Comment author must fill out name and email
- Users must be registered and logged in to comment
- Automatically close comments on articles older than days
- Comment must be manually approved
- Comment author must have a previously approved comment
- Comment Moderation (comment contains above a certain number of links, comment contains certain words)
- Comment Blacklist (comment contains certain words)
- Click Save Changes.
How to Use Akismet to Reduce Comment Spam
Akismet is an advanced spam filtering system on your WordPress website and is available for you to activate. You will need to obtain and activate your Akismet API key in order for the plugin to work.
To Obtain and Activate Your Akismet API Key:
- Need a WordPress.com Account
- Go to WordPress.com.
- Fill in your desired WordPress.com account credentials.
- Click Sign Up.
- Click Activate Account in the confirmation email.
- Already Have a WordPress.com Account
- Log in to your WordPress Dashboard.
- Go to Jetpack.
- Go to Akismet.
- Click Get Your API Key.
- Click Get an Akismet API Key.
- Click I Already Have a WordPress.com Account.
- Log in using your WordPress.com credentials.
- Click Authorize.
- Click Sign Up under the plan of your choice.
- Fill out your Payment Information (if applicable).
- Type in a First Name and Last Name.
- Click Save Your Akismet API Key.
- Click Save Changes.
