What are Keywords
Keywords describe the purpose and content of your site as precisely as possible. Selecting good keywords and using them properly is instrumental in obtaining a good search engine ranking. Here are some tips:
- You should have no more than 10 Keywords per a specific URL page.
- Make sure that the tagged keywords are being used on the URL page where they are specified.
- The keywords should be as specific as possible to your product or service. For example, instead of broad keywords like 'cookies,' use the more specific 'chocolate chip cookies.'
Use SubmitNet's Keyword Analysis tool.
- Go to your SubmitNet page.

- the page number where the URL is listed
- the URL listed on the search engine

Excessive Keywords warning
If you receive an Excessive Keywords warning from the Engine Guideline tool, but you have used the keyword less than 10 times on your URL page, check the HTML code for your page. If your keywords are used within the HTML code, they will not affect your site's ranking.
Use SubmitNet's Engine Guidelines tool and avoid hidden text.
The Search Engine Guidelines tool will visit your site and check for possible violations of common search engine guidelines, one of which is hidden text. Normally, when a search engine encounters hidden text on your site, it may view it as an attempt at manipulation, and it may lower your site ranking. Hence, the Engine Guideline tool searches for hidden text. Here are some common causes of hidden text:
- There is text on your page that is the same color as the background.
- There is text over a picture on your page.
- There is text inside of the HTML code on your page.
Please examine your page carefully. If possible, try to avoid these instances of hidden text.
The keywords on the Position Check tool do not match my keywords. Why
The Position Check tool uses the keywords you entered into your Submission Options tool rather than the ones found in the Keywords Meta Tag on your page.
To sync your keywords:
- Go to your SubmitNet page. Click Go to SubmitNet.
- Click Edit Keywords or run the Submission Options tool.
I used a keyword 5 times on my site, but the Keyword Analysis tool is not picking it up. Why
The Keyword Analysis tool only checks the URL specified rather than checking the entire website. The search engines compare the keywords in the webpage URL's Keyword Meta Tag to the text of that same page only. The Keyword Analysis tool is designed to function similarly.
What is the Position Check tool?
The Position Check tool in SubmitNet tracks your site's placement (also called position or rank) with the major search engines, using the keywords you provided to describe your site (in the Submission page) or keywords you choose specifically for the Position Check report.
Please keep in mind that site position, or rank, can vary minute by minute, even on identical searches. Some engines display results on the fly, and some only change listing when they re-index sites, causing changes in site rankings. These fluctuations are normal for all sites.
Increase your site's rank using incoming links
If you analyze the Competitor Analysis for your site, you may notice that competitor sites gain a higher rank with the only difference that they have incoming links. This is correct. Incoming links from highly ranked sites with good traffic are given a higher rank. To increase your rank, consider listing your site in a community directory.
